A TRUE LOVE LASTS A LIFETIME….THE STORY OF MY LONDON

I can’t really pinpoint the exact moment when I fell in love with London but it was definitely love at first sight. Can I actually say love at first sight if I was already smitten even before I went there and saw it for myself? However, I’ve seen thousands of pictures of London in books, online and on TV so I guess you could say that it was love at first sight.

So, I blame the books for my love of London and some films too. When I was a child I used to read avidly and I grew fond of books such as Enid Blyton’s the Famous Five which depicted this idealized picture of a childhood spent chasing adventures in the British countryside. Even though Blyton’s books aren’t about London they definitely planted that first seed of my anglophilia which later developed in a passion for London especially and in love of all things British particularly.

Over the years I fantasized about my trip to London. I had to wait for quite some time for my first London trip and it eventually happened for New Years’ 2007. My best friend and I spent five wonderful days in London. Things are rarely as they appear in your dreams or in your imagination so I was at first slightly taken aback by everything I’ve seen and experienced in London in those first two or three days. But then when everything started to sink in I’ve become aware that I had finally fulfilled my dream of visiting London. And I was happy. And London was as beautiful as I had hoped it would be and even more because now it was real for me. Of course, nothing is perfect so neither is London (what a heresy) but its those imperfections that make us love something truly and deeply. So my infatuation with London is still strong after so many years of visiting it and many more of admiring it from afar.I haven’t been to London since 2013 because I’ve had some major things happening in my life like getting engaged and then getting married.

I know you can’t love a city, at least not as you love a person, but London has been my crush for quite some time and it’s not likely that I’ll stop wanting to visit it and explore it because there’s always something new in London to see. And a true love lasts a lifetime.

  1. I felt the same way before visiting London, like I’d spend my whole life reading about it and dreaming about visiting! When I eventually went it did live up to my expectations in that it is a dynamic, ever changing metropolis that always has something new to celebrate. I’ve wanted to make it my home base for a while. Hopefully one day soon!

  2. Such a cute post! Thanks for sharing this post with me – I’m always interested to see what draws people to a city and makes them fall in love with it. For my, London was the first place I visited in Europe and I fell in love – it looks like your love for it started way before you ever set foot in the city!

  3. Hello Tanja – I love London also – my favourite places are Borough Market, Covent Garden and John Soames’s House. I often take Eurostar to go to the theatre, but am excited that ‘Cats’ is coming to Paris this Autumn…..
