Bled-Slovenia ( August 2015)

My husband S. and I spent a short but enjoyable weekend in Bled (Slovenia) recently. I wanted to go to a place with beautiful nature so that we could do a bit of sports. We’ve been to Bled before but not together actually so I knew that we’d have a great time.
Bled is famous for its Alpine lake with a small island (there’s a church on it) and the Bled Castle perched on a rock above the lake. It’s close to the Triglav National Park and to some ski resorts too.
We cycled from the village where we stayed at to Bled and then did a full circle around the lake. I’m in terrible shape lately and I was red like a lobster and huffed and puffed like a dying dragon while I was cycling. Especially since it was very hot and sunny. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the bike ride. There were a lot of people sunbathing and swimming in the lake (I’ve swum in the lake on my previous trip). We didn’t hire a boat to go to the island because there just wasn’t that much time to do it all.

We went up to the castle (on foot, I’d have died if we had gone by bike) but then decided not to pay for the ticket to go in since I’ve actually been there before and my husband wasn’t that bothered to go in there by himself. After that we cycled back to our luxurious private accommodation in a nearby village. We had dinner in a restaurant in the village. The meal was all right but the special part was the dessert. I wanted to have Bled Cream Cake but they didn’t have it. Instead the waiter suggested we try another traditional local cake (it’s called Blejska grmada in Slovenian) and we did just that. It was scrumptious and very fulfilling. I’ve never had something like that before. The waiter explained that they used to have this in every Slovenian restaurant but that nowadays you can hardly find it anywhere. We drank some nice white Slovenian wine too.

The next day we chose to do something new for both of us and visited the nearby Vintgar Gorge (Sotjeska Vintgar). You can read about that in my next post. So, after exploring the gorge we returned to Bled just so that I could have a dessert. It’s Bled Cream Cake (kremna rezina and also known as kremsnita) which is a symbol of Bled as much as the lake is. However, it’s not really unique just to Slovenia since you can find it in Austria as well (and in some other countries too). It was delicious and big, almost like a meal in itself but I’m not sure whether it was any different than the same cake that I had in other places. And with the dessert we finished our visit of Bled. It was a short&sweet stay.

Post scriptum: Whenever we travel together we need to organize a cat sitter for our cat. That honour is usually bestowed upon my parents but since they were away too we had to ask a friend to come over and look after our cat. I’m happy to report that the friend survived. And more importantly so did our cat! 🙂 🙂

So have you been to Bled? Have you ever visited Slovenia?

  1. I’m torn between drooling over the wonderful scenery and drooling over the yummy cakes. Would love to visit Slovenia – and Lake Bled is such a beautiful place.

  2. You look the picture of health on that bicycle, Tanja – not like a dying dragon at all! At least you got to earn your piece of cake. I’d love to visit Bled. Those photos are stunning 🙂 #FarawayFiles
