I visited Bratislava, Slovakia for the first time when I was 12. I went with my grandma and her friends. What I remember most from that trip is going up the UFO bridge & tower  and eating a cake in the revolving restaurant at the top. We also visited Bratislava castle and just wandered around the historical city center.  I loved my grandma very much and I used to go everywhere with her. Sadly, she passed away when I was only 16 so she didn’t get to see me graduate or get married.

The second time I visited Bratislava was in September 2012. I spent an afternoon in Bratislava on a trip from Budapest to Prague. Everything looked different (better) than on my previous visit. The castle got a fresh coat of paint as well as did all the other buildings in the center. The city was full of tourists and it seemed that Bratislava was enjoying its well-deserved  glory. Maybe one day I go back and explore the city properly.

  1. I think you might have sold me! I think I would enjoy Bratislava more than Prague or Budapest – which I am sure is lovely but I would be able to not rush through Bratislava as it is so close to Vienna as opposed to the other two places which are further away..

  6. We got stranded in Bratislava’s tiny airport for 10 hours a few years ago. If only I knew then how beautiful this city is and if the airline staff were honest enough as to when we’ll be able to take the flight, we should’ve gotten out of the airport to explore the city. :p

  9. Hi Tanja! Sorry about your loss. It is very fortunate that you have such nice memories from your grandma 🙂 Bratislava looks amazing! I love those old medieval towns with the cobblestone streets 🙂 Haven’t been yet, but I think I should add it to my list 😉

  10. Hi Tanja! We were there in February, a day trip from Vienna. Funny how the two cities could not be any more different – beautiful, stuffy, cold Vienna and gritty, friendly and atmospheric Bratislava. It reminded us of many of the things we like about Eastern Europe.
    One thing I have to say though – that castle has to be the most boring castle in Europe and the paintjob makes it look like they just covered it in stucco.
    But overall a fun and quirky visit (that UFO tower just weird isn’t it?)

    1. When I first visited Bratislava, the castle was all grey so I do think it’s nicer now:)) UFO’s great! it offers great views and it revolves and you can eat there!

  16. I had no idea how close Bratislava was to Vienna! I know I’d like to go back to Vienna someday, so I’ll look into adding on a stop in Slovakia while there. I think it’s so great that you have travel memories with your grandmother. What a fun thing to look back on and remember her by.

  20. Oh how lovely. I would love to visit Bratislava one day and did not realise it is so close to Vienn. How long did your roadtrip from Budapest to Prague take and what route did you go?

    1. Yes, you can even travel by a river boat from Vienna to Bratislava.it was around 5 hours I think, we went via Bratislava:) and of course a trip from Croatia to Budapest before:)
