My English memories: Cambridge

Back in 2008 I visited Cambridge several times. Why? A simple reason really: I worked only a short train ride away. I’ve only been to London before my work experience in the UK so I had no idea how the rest of the country looks like. I had a couple of vague romantic ideas which I mainly got from many English movies and books that I devoured like a kid on a sugar rush. Cambridge lived up to those ideas. And more so!

I can’t say that I did many touristy things in Cambridge but I did have the privilege of visiting several colleges. I’ve visited Clare college, Trinity college, Christs’s college and King’s college and its beautiful chapel. I even stayed at one of the modern colleges 🙂 Furthermore, I went to Fitzwilliam museum but I can’t say that I’ve really explored it since I had some tummy problems and later I just went to Cambridge to do some shopping and to walk around the Backs. I always assumed that there would be another opportunity to fully explore Cambridge but it didn’t happen in the end. During my first visit I had drinks at the most famous Cambridge pub: The Eagle. Also, I tried punting. That was a fun and difficult experience. We had to punt ourselves and even though my friends managed it well I found it to be really strenuous. Next time, I’m hiring a punt with the punter! I walked around Cambridge’s lovely streets and admired the fairy-tale architecture of its colleges. Oh, I wish I could have earned my degree in Cambridge. Instead I bought an university t-shirt as a souvenir 🙂

  6. I think you have to go punting at least once in Cambridge to get the full experience- last time I visited it was winter and we went out with huge blankets and someone to do the hard work though! Thanks for linking up with #citytripping

  7. Love your photos…I would love to go Cambridge..it just so happens that I was thinking about possibly going on a sabbatical sometime next year, and I’m hoping to take a month off to travel to some parts of Europe including London and Cambridge is on my mind 🙂 #citytripping

  9. You are tempting me to visit this city. I have heard you should choose between Cambridge and Oxford when you visit the UK. I think I will like to visit both. And, I will like to participate in punting if I visit Cambridge. #citytripping

  15. Now this brings back memories. I was an undergraduate at Cambridge so lived and studied there for three years. I was at Emmanuel College which is very central and yet, once through the gates, it’s another world with a large pond and grounds. I was very lucky. We live fairly near Cambridge now so I often go back.

  17. I love love Cambridge. Punting on the Cam is a must. I was lucky my boyfriend did the punting and I just got to enjoy it. I also enjoyed the Fitzwilliam (blog coming soon) and the Cambridge American Cemetery was very moving. I want to go back and tour the colleges though. I’ve only been when school was out so they weren’t open. I also still want to see the Archeology Museum. It is such a pretty town, I’m looking forward to going back.   20. I loved Cambridge! I prefer it to Oxford. I just love the atmosphere and the quaint shops – I recall a fudge shop and a really nice market in the centre. I didn’t go punting but it’s just as nice to walk along the river and watch them at it. I love the mathematical bridge. I love that first pic of the river looks idyllic #FarawayFiles

  28. some of these shots look familiar from watching several seasons of Morse, which has put Cambridge much higher on my travel wish list. it’s always nice when you visit a place and it lives up to your fanciful expectations.

  29. I love Cambridge and was fortunate to live there for a few months many years ago. We visited last year again and had a wonderful day. I love the way you can just wander around and be surrounded by all the history and beautiful buildings.

  32. I haven’t been yet but it’s definitely on my list of places to visit in England.. along with sooooo many others haha. I’ve been to Oxford tho & loved it there so I imagine I’d love Cambridge too 🙂

  35. I visited Cambridge once and absolutely loved it! It’s like you’re stepping back in time just walking around. And to think of all the academics who have been there! I definitely would love to go back.

  37. I did visit Cambridge twenty-something years ago when I first went to England. I keep meaning to go back but haven’t made it yet. Your photos make me want to though. They look like you stepped into one of the many books set in an English university town.
