My English bucket list

I’ve visited Bath in 2009 so it’s not on this list but it doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t want to visit it again

I don’t really do bucket lists. Occasionally I’ll write down a couple of places I’d like to visit but I don’t give myself a set time frame to accomplish those travel wishes. Also, I sometimes go to a place because I found a bargain flight not necessarily because it was on some sort of my bucket/travel wish list. I’m pretty keen on London as you might have gathered from my blog. I am also an anglophile (did the name give me out? 🙂 ) so I’d like to visit as many places in England as I possibly could. But there’s only one problem with that: money. England isn’t a cheap country and since I also want to visit some other countries too I can’t just spend all my travel money on multiple visits to England.

Some of the places have been on this bucket list for a long time while others are new entries (thanks to the fellow bloggers I now have an ever increasing travel wish list/bucket list). I’d hoped to visit more of England during my work experience in the UK and during my subsequent visits but London was always high up on my list so I didn’t cross off as many places as I’d hoped. However, I did visit quite a bit, especially in beautiful Suffolk (check my Places I’ve visited page). I just haven’t written about them much (you can read about Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds). I have visited Scotland too and fell in love with Edinburgh. I’d like to explore even more of Scotland but that’s a topic for some other post. Moreover, I’d really like to visit Wales and Northern Ireland some day too. But let me show you first my English bucket list.

My English bucket list

Brighton

They call it London by the sea. I’d love to see the Royal Pavilion and to walk on the Pier and spend some time at the beach.

Windsor Castle

Visiting the royal castle would be a special treat for me.

Highclere castle

Downton abbey was filmed here. Need I say more?

Cotswolds

The picture perfect villages of Cotswolds have put a spell on many visitors so I’m sure I’d love them too.

Salisbury

I’ve visited Bath and Stonehenge but unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to see Salisbury’s cathedral too.

England
I’ve been lucky to see the Stonehenge

Cornwall

I’ve seen so many beautiful photos of Cornwall’s seaside and its pretty towns.

York

I’d like to walk on York’s historical walls and I’d like to explore the Shambles.

Stratford-upon-Avon

The birthplace of Shakespeare. Since I actually studied English literature I really should have visited it by now.

Canterbury cathedral

Another majestic cathedral to add to my list of visited places.

Leeds castle

I’m told it’s one of the prettiest castles in England. And I love castles.

Lake District

I usually visit cities on my trips but I’d like to see the beautiful nature of the Lake District.

Oxford
I’ve visited Oxford too and loved it!

Whitby

Bram Stoker’s Dracula was here. Yes, I want to visit it!

Hadrian’s Wall

The former border of the once mighty Roman empire. Yes, please, I’d like to follow in the Roman footsteps and walk along the walls.

Arundel Castle

Another amazing castle to visit. I’ve been to a few English castles but England is chock-full of gorgeous castles.

Exeter

Timber-framed historical houses. A good enough reason for me to visit it.

Blenheim palace

I’ve seen it in so many movies and Churchill was born here.

So, this is my English bucket list. Oh, I could have added more castles and historical houses but this list is already long enough. I’d consider myself lucky if I manage to visit at least a handful of these places.

  5. What a wonderful post, I do hope you get to visit all the places on this bucket list in the not too distant future.
    I’m a Brit and about 8 years ago I decided to do Land’s End to John O’Groats by train (I’m not one of those brave souls who walk or cycle it) and it was a great way to see a lot of the UK. Planning and buying train tickets 3 months in advance was a great way to stretch out my limited funds.
    Two memorable places for me on that trip was The Minack Theatre in Cornwall, an open air theatre cut into a rocky outcrop above the sea. And Fort Augustus in the Highlands of Scotland, it is a small village on the banks of Loch Ness.

  9. New to blogging and just happened to see your post. Loved it. I got the opportunity to check off a few of my English bucketlist items last year. Sadly I missed Highclere Castle as they had a music festival on there and the castle was closed. Stonehenge……AMAZING. I have taken a few from your list and added to mine for my next trip. As I mentioned Im new to blogging and have started highlighting some places in Australia and am now excited to post about my Scottish/English trip. Thanks for the read.   10. I visited a few of these places during our 16 day trip to England last summer. It really wasn’t enough time as there were loads of places that I didn’t get to see. That was my 2nd trip, and I seem to be prioritizing that which I most regretted not visiting the previous time. #WkendTravelInspiration (P.S. I thought you were British because of you blog name. Now that I’ve read your About page, I realize that you are, in fact, Croation. You’re a lot closer to England than I am.) #WkendTravelInspiration

  12. I really want to go to the Lake District and Hadrian’s wall but the top of my list would be Cornwall. I’ve read so many books set there and it looks like it’s right up my alley. I have been to London, York,Brighton and Stonehenge. I think it’s time for another visit to England!

  14. This is a great list. My UK bucket list is somewhat inspired by whatever BBC shows I’m watching, so Cornwall from Doc Martin and Oxford from Morse. I’d add Hiclerc caste and some Harry Potter locations for the young one. #wkendtravelinspiration

  15. My bucket list has expanded over the years (yes, thanks to other travel bloggers). I travelled the U.K. for about 5 weeks in 2012 and saw many of the things on my British “bucket list”. I, unfortunately, missed some areas as there is only so much time.

  16. The Lake District is gorgeous, plan a few days there! Also, Blenheim Palace is totally worth the trip. I was super excited for Highclere because of Downton Abbey, but it ended up being one of the most disappointing sites I’ve visited in England. It’s very, very popular and crowded, plus it’s just not all that spectacular. My husband is British and he actually proposed to me at Highclere, because I had been so excited to see it. It’s near his hometown of Newbury and my mother-in-law takes exercise classes with Lady Carnarvon, the current owner of the house. Which is pretty cool!

  18. I’m a list person so I have a few different travel wish lists. Lists help me organize my thoughts and my plans while at the same time being very loose and non exclusive. I hope you are able to visit most of these places, if not all! Happy travels! #wkendtravelinspiration

  19. What a fabulous list! There’s so many places I haven’t been on that list and I grew up here! I’d really like to walk Hadrian’s wall one day. My bucket list is currently including exploring the northern cities – Manchester and Liverpool especially – having been in London a long time, I want to see how different it all is up north 🙂

I’m thinking I might just “borrow” your bucket list and pretty much make it my list. 😉 London is absolutely my most favorite city in the world, and I have yet to see anything else in England besides. While it’s expensive, I feel that traveling England with kids would still be less stressful than any other country (besides Germany, due to family ties) since we at least don’t have a language barrier with which to wrestle. Great list, thanks for sharing!

  25. Great list 🙂 Makes me want to go back to England… I also worked there for 2 years and tried to travel and see as much as I could – I was lucky to see many of the places on your list. I’d love to go back but yes, it is soooo expensive, if you don’t earn pounds (or euros!) One day, I’ll return for a proper English holiday.

  27. I’ve been to a few places on your list and you’re definitely on the right track with them. If you’re lucky you can book cheap train tickets to some of them as well, which cuts down on the cost. I also fell in love with Edinburgh and HAVE to visit again. Scotland is gorgeous! #wanderfulwednesday

  33. Good luck, Tanja, I’m rooting for you to accomplish it all! Brighton is definitely on my list, too – I can’t believe I haven’t visited yet. And I’m so happy to see Exeter on your list 🙂 It’s not super high up on foreign tourist radars (most of my friends from home never heard of it before I moved there!). If you ever end up planning a trip to Exeter, I’d love to give you some recommendations on what to see – it’s seriously one of my very favorite places in the whole world 🙂

  39. Some of my favourites are Dartmouth in Devon, Whitstable in Kent (both lovely seaside places) and Northumberland – gorgeous scenery plus it has Alnwick Castle which is a great day out! You must go to Northern Ireland as well – I am biased about that – but I could give you a never ending list of fantastic places there!

  44. There are so many amazing places in the UK I too would love to visit, you’re so lucky to have been to Stonehenge, that’s on my list and I’m hoping to go this year! I had no idea Blenheim Palace was so famous, I actually live really close so I guess I really ought to visit at some point, I didn’t know Churchill was born there! And yes, the Lake District looks beautiful, I would love to visit there too. Great post 🙂
