Postcard from Genoa, Italy

Bel paese (meaning beautiful country in Italian) is definitely a great term for Italy. While most of the people visit Venice or Florence or Rome, I doubt that many have ventured to historical port city of Genoa. Perhaps you went on a cruise along the Mediterranean and you embarked on your cruise ship in Genoa? But did you roam its gritty streets and have you seen its baroque palaces and lively squares? Did you know that Genoa is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and that it once was a powerful merchant republic just like Venice? It even shares its flag with England ( St. George’s flag). A part of the old town of Genoa is inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO) which is just another reason you should visit Genoa one day. And no, this isn’t a sponsored post 🙂 I dare you to give Genoa a chance.

  14. Well as you know I am most definitely going to be charmed by Genoa when I make it there one day. I like Italy’s “real” cities. Give me grit every time. The best bit about Italy is it usually comes with a side of glamour! Thanks for joining #FarawayFiles

  18. I visited Genoa many years ago when Ryan air flights really were £10. I remember a very relaxed visit, lots of seafood sunshine and of course wine. Your photos are are lovely reminder of that time.

  23. I need to spend more time exploring Italy. I’m not sure I’d visit Genoa first (have to get the big cities checked off my list), but if I were passing through I’d definitely explore it. 🙂

  25. I think we stopped in Genoa once to have pesto pasta, and the water around there was absolutely stunning. All of Italy is gorgeous, so it’s totally worth it to get out and explore something other than the BIG 3, like you mentioned. Will definitely take a walk around Genoa if we ever get there again… 🙂 #citytripping

  27. what a beautiful place…i love a town that climbs up a hill. great photos of the different historical buildings. did you go inside the biggest aquarium in Europe? and it’s so funny to me that there’s an Elvis statue – we recently visited graceland and i continue to wonder at his world-wide appeal.

  29. We are headed here on a Mediterranean Cruise. I wasn’t sure what to expect but these pictures have made me exited for this stop. I’ll have to see if we can find a city tour or something so I can hear about all the buildings you have photos of. Thanks for sharing your photos. #CityTripping
