Life & blog update: July 2024

Klagenfurt, Austria

Life & blog update: July 2024…was a more eventful month than June. Some beach time, some outings with friends and a two days trip to Klagenfurt, Austria sums up our July. Kids went to daycare on/off throughout July, spending long weekends on Krk island. I joined them whenever I could since I also work at the weekends. Nevertheless, I did manage to get a bit of a suntan and to swim and have fun with my kids at the beach.

Last year my husband and I spent a weekend in Padua, Italy to attend Rammstein’s concert. It’s one of my husband’s favourite metal bands. Well, actually, my husband and my best friend’s husband went to the concert while my best friend and I enjoyed a few Aperol spritzs in the center of Padua. It was a fun weekend. My husband really enjoyed last year’s Rammstein concert so he decided to buy tickets for this year’s concert too. He chose a concert in Klagenfurt because he has some relatives there so that we can spend the night at their place. I’ve previously visited Klagenfurt so we decided to spend a few hours in the city center before going to the concert. I was more excited about our plans to visit Hochosterwitz castle the next day than to go to the concert, to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, I like Rammstein too but I’m just too old and grumpy to be standing in a crowd drinking an overpriced drink. The concert was all right, it had all the usual fire gimmicks this band is famous for. At some point during the concert it started to rain heavily. I got completely soaked but that made me feel alive and present in the moment. However, that sensation lasted only briefly because then I started to feel cold and grumpy again. We both really enjoyed visiting Hochosterwitz castle the next day.

July was very hot as usually but it seems that summers are getting hotter and hotter. And I’m getting older and older and detest the heat more and more. Kids are on holidays in August and then my son starts school in September and my daughter continues going to daycare. We have some plans for a short family trip at the end of August.

Are you following the Olympic games? Croatia’s got a few medals so far. Very proud of my small nation. I didn’t see the grand opening or watched any of the competitions.

My new job is still very dynamic and exciting but also very stressful occasionally. I think I’ve got accustomed to my work schedule but it still feels like I have to defend my choice of quitting my previous job with regular working hours to other people. Well, it is my life, my decision.

How was your July and what are your plans for August?

  1. I am glad you had a wonderful July, Tanja! I haven’t watched much of the Olympics but yesterday, we went to the nearby town in Sligo to welcome home Mona McSharry who is Olympic 100m breaststroke bronze medallist. It was fantastic to experience how she was given a hero’s welcome in her hometown of Grange, Co Sligo as hundreds of people turned out to celebrate the achievements of the first Olympic medallist from the northwest. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  2. Hi Tanja, Absolutly don’t let anyone tell you how to live your life. I quit my job in 2021 in the middle of the pandemic and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made with my life. Even though I’m back to work now, I have a complete different perspective on work life balance.

Sounds like you had a busy and fun-filled July! One of my friends is a Rammstein fan, she attends multiple concerts even in the same city. I tried to listen, I am too old for it 🙂

    Happy August!

  3. I’m definitely getting grumpier as I get older and I’d also be far more excited about visiting a castle than going to a concert 🙂 I’ve been dipping in and out of the Olympics, and have enjoyed the events I’ve seen. I’m full of admiration for the athletes. I can’t begin to imaging how much work and dedication they’ve had to put in to compete at the games.

  4. “However, that sensation lasted only briefly because then I started to feel cold and grumpy again” -> 😂🤣😂🤣 I get ya! I’m not a fan of loud music and crowds, so no surprise I’m not much of a concert goer.

I’ve been watching the Olympics with my sons a bit – these little boys are sports fans, and now they’re old enough to understand what’s going on. I think a year ago they were still too young to care. Now they always pick a nation they root for. As for me, I’m ogling Paris views where I can, they’ve had some lovely drone footage.

  5. Will you have been languishing in summer heat I have been visiting the snowfields in our very short winter here in Australia.
I agree the heat is harder to tolerate when you have a busy life and family. It can be another stress you don’t need, plus the world is warming!!
It was lovely to hear that you felt in the present moment during that rain shower – albeit briefly. The castle does sound intriguing. How fortunate you are to live close to such old structures. I haven’t been watching the Olympics, but many people here have. Australia is a bit obsessed with sport and the Olympics and it’s always a trigger for a patriotic surge.

  6. I am with you- the older I get the more cranky I get about crowds and heat. It sounds like you have had a good month. My daughter went back to school today so our summer vacation is at an end. I hope your last month of summer is wonderful 🙂

  7. Sounds like a lovely time spent in Austria and Italy this July! Work will always be work, right? I’ve been casually following the Olympic Games and, aside from my home country (USA) winning in many events, there are plenty of other countries that are doing very well for themselves! Have a wonderful August, and stay cool!
