As the holiday season approaches, the picturesque coastal town of Opatija in Croatia transforms into a winter wonderland, celebrating Advent with charm and elegance. Nestled along the stunning Adriatic coast, Opatija boasts a rich history and interesting sights, making it a perfect destination for those seeking both festive spirit and leisurely seaside walks.
Opatija, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is the oldest tourist destination in Croatia. Originally a small fishing village, it gained prominence in the 19th century as a health resort for the elite of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The town’s elegant villas, designed in the architectural styles of the period, still stand as a testament to its glorious past.

The most beautiful Advent by the Sea: Opatija, Croatia
During the Advent season, the natural beauty of Opatija is accentuated by festive decorations and lighting. You should take a walk along Lungomare promenade which stretches to Lovran on one side and to Volosko on another side. During Advent, Lungomare promenade is adorned with fairy lights, creating a magical atmosphere for leisurely walks. There are two small, open air Christmas markets in Opatija. One is located near Juraj Šporer Art pavilion and another one is at the summer open air theater which is transformed into an ice-skating ring.
You’d definitely take a photo at a bench near the symbol of Opatija (Maiden with the Seagull). You could even attend a Christmas mass at small St James’s church and admire the Christmas decorations in St James’ park. Don’t forget to see the Advent wreath around Slatina fountain and the Christmas tree at open air market with fresh produce. The park around Villa Angiolina which houses the Museum of Tourism has many delightful surprises.
There are many free concerts, plays and children’s workshops during Advent. Many hotels and cafes have special menus and special offers during the festive period. There’s something for everybody in Opatija.
Advent in Opatija is held from 29.11.2024. to 06.01.2025. For the list of events and some practical information click here.

I love the Glagolitic script ornaments on one of the trees, and the octopus ornaments too! I’ve never been to Opatija but would love to go. It has such an aristocratic mystique about it.
