Life & blog update: August 2023

Somewhere in Croatia

Life & blog update: August 2023… was a month of holidays and hard work. Yes, 2 in 1. I had two weeks of holidays at the beginning of the month which we spent on island Krk at the beach. Then, the rest of the month was very stressful at work (again!), that basically I need another holiday now.

The beach holiday at our summer house on island Krk was very good. I’d planned several new experiences for this summer and I’m happy that we did all of them. We rented a pedal boat with small toboggan like the one from my childhood. My son loved it! Then, one day we went on a semi-submarine tour and saw lots of fish and even a mermaid. The mermaid girl was very convincing but you can’t fool my kids. They asked why doesn’t she breath under water but holds her breath. “She’s obviously not a real mermaid”, my daughter said. However, they still enjoyed that semi-submarine tour very much. Friends came over to our house and we visited other friends in a different seaside town. We also took our kids to a muddy beach because they wanted to build a sand castle. So, a healing mud beach was the next best thing! Rain interrupted our holidays briefly but then we returned to the beach two days later.

There was one interesting event in August too. We joined a fascinating Ghost tour of Veprinac (a small hilltop village near Opatija). It was more like a live theater than a tour. It was spellbinding to learn about the local folklore and get scared and have fun and even get a free tasting of locally produced wine and spirits.

August is a month of anniversaries for me. I got married at the end of August 9 years ago. It was a beautiful wedding. What matters more, is the life you build together and how you treat each other. Having small kids puts a strain to every relationship, trust me. You both loose something, your sleep, your free time, your hobbies, especially mothers. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with child care and to forget about oneself. On the one hand, we do travel by ourselves, without the kids, and have occasional dates. On another hand, we still need to work on some things in our relationship.

Coincidentally, I published my first blog post 8 years ago. I still like blogging. It may take me a while to post about my travels but eventually all my travel adventures get their rightful place here. Anyway, who’s already preparing for Christmas? My old Christmas markets mugs have gotten new views lately.

How was your August? Was it as hot as here (temperatures over 30 °C) for weeks? What are your plans for September? For us, September is a month of birthdays (our daughter turns 4 very soon!)

  1. Sounds like a very fun holiday! I love ghost tours too, they are always very informative and fun! Congrats on your wedding anniversary and blogging anniversary! Two amazing achievements! I also had a great summer with very high temperatures in South Italy and France, but really enjoyed the time off! Have a lovely September!

  2. Wishing you and your husband a wonderful anniversary! Nine years is certainly a milestone to celebrate– you’ll be at your 10-year anniversary very soon! And a happy blogiversary, as eight years truly is a long time in the blogging world, especially with so many blogs coming and going over the years…it’s surreal to believe that we’re in the last quarter of 2023, and that Christmas will come by sooner than expected! Until then, there’s the fall season to look forward to, and definitely cooler weather! Have a wonderful September ahead, Tanja!

  3. What a busy time for you and your husband, but I’m impressed that you travel alone on occasion and still go on dates. We had been married for 25 years before we ever took a vacation without our kids. I still wish that we had taken our kids on more vacations though. Have a good day.

  4. With a school kid and a 10-month-old baby at home, I know well what you mean Tanja about having kids. You won’t get too ultra-simple if your life includes children … but you can find ways to simplify, no matter how many kids you have. It’s not easy, but I find that if you have too many things you want to do, or need to do, your life will become complicated. But if you choose just a few things that are important to you, you can eliminate the rest, and simplify your life greatly. Thanks for sharing and Happy September 🙂 Aiva xx

  5. The children grow up fast and you are right, they place different strains and alter ones relationships. Positively and sometimes negatively.
But family life doesn’t last forever so treasure these times. I do miss them now my kids are adults.
