A bookworm’s paradise: Daunt Books, Marylebone, London

Daunt books bookshop

Daunt Books is a chain of independent bookshops throughout London but its most famous bookshop is located in a gorgeous Edwardian building in Marylebone. The original Marylebone bookshop was first opened in 1912 and to this day it has retained the unconventional skylights and the long oak galleries reminiscent of its past, glorious days. Whether you’re visiting this Marylebone bookshop for its architecture or a wide selection of travel books and literature you won’t be disappointed since Daunt Books offers a browsing experience like no other. The shop’s unique layout, with books arranged by country, creates a sense of wanderlust and adventure.

I visited Daunt Books, Marylebone in December last year. Although the bookshop seems to have become a popular tourist attraction on its own right, it wasn’t exactly shoulder to shoulder during my visit. I was able to take numerous photos of its beautiful interior and browse the bookshelves to my heart’s content.

I soon found a familiar section on the main floor which consisted of mainly tourist guides and not fiction books from Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia etc., all lumped together under the wide geographical term the Balkans. I was both equally surprised and pleased when I saw a book by my former university professor on that shelf (Daša Drndić). Walking around the main floor with its large glass stained window and delightful Christmas tree made me feel like I was in a place of worship.

I ventured downstairs to America, Australia and Asian section and found the room virtually devoid of shoppers. Since my husband and I somehow got separated and he was already waiting for me outside I decided to go upstairs to the narrow gallery. It was a bit tricky to walk past other people on the gallery since everyone had their nose in a book. The upstairs gallery has a large section of books from/about Great Britain and a specific shelf just for London. I could have bought a bunch of books but we only had a carry-on on this trip so I left empty-handed.

Besides travel books, you can find a wide range of fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as stationery and gifts. I saw a lot of people buying expensive canvas bags at the cash desk at the exit of the shop. You can order books and other items online at the bookshop’s website too.

In conclusion, Daunt Books in Marylebone offers a truly enchanting experience for book lovers and curious travelers alike.
