Life & blog update: April 2024

Fužine, Croatia

Life & blog update: April 2024…was all about my new job. I’ve settled in well. It is a very dynamic and interesting role but the work schedule is quite tiring.

Of course, my hobbies and my blog have taken a second seat for the time being. I’d like to continue posting about my last year’s trip to Krakow and Helsinki but I haven’t had much inspiration lately for any sort of writing.

We had a fun family day out to Fužine, Gorski kotar (the forest area of Croatia). Firstly, we had a guided tour of a small cave (Vrelo). The guide shared with us some basic facts about the cave. It wasn’t too cold or too wet inside the cave. And we were all surprised by an interesting “artifact” at the end of the cave. Afterwards, my kids played for a while and then we walked all around the large artificial Lake Bajer. It is quite a long walk and the sun was shining relentlessly even though it was just April and not summer. Our fun day out didn’t finish just yet. We drove for 10 minutes to a nearby village of  Vrata to try tubing. It costs 5 euros for 10 rides. We all had a go and then we bought another 5 euro ticket for the kids because they were shrieking with excitement and clearly had a blast. My daughter was the youngest and the smallest child there. She is quite fearless.

I’ve also taken my kids to the Natural History museum for the first time. It’s a small but well designed museum. Kids liked two things the best: modern features (the bear hologram and under the sea movie projection on the wall), and playing paleontologists in a small sand pit, uncovering “fossils” with a brush.

At the end of the month we participated in the biggest public road running race in Croatia: Homo si teć in Rijeka. We did the preschool race which isn’t competitive so all the kids got a small gift at the end of the race. There were thousands of kids running with their parents. It was very difficult just to walk let alone run in the first part of the race. When the race route moved to the actual wide road, then we were able to finally run properly. This was my first ever run in any official race. After the race, my kids watched a clown show. The premise of the race is great, to get everyone involved despite their age and athletic prowess. However, moving in the huge crowd was somewhat claustrophobic and the long queues for the gifts were awful.

What’s the weather like in your area? Here, the sun seems to be stronger and stronger each year. And the weather gets more extreme. We had both the hottest and the coldest day on record for April.

How was your April? Any trips planned for May?

  3. A busy month with work, but also some time for some fun, it seems! Sounds like a pleasant April: my April was also just a lot of work, but also busy planning for upcoming trips. I anticipate for May to be similar. Have a good May ahead!
