Split is one of the most beautiful seaside cities in Croatia. Therefore, it’s no wonder that Split is very popular among the tourists especially during the summer. Most visitors dance the night away at Ultra Europe festival and then take a ferry to famous Dalmatian islands such as Brač and Hvar the next day. But there’s much more to Split than just that. Split deserves at least a long weekend spent leisurely wandering down its narrow streets and enjoying its local cuisine.
If you didn’t know, Split was founded by the Greeks but later became the home of the Roman emperor Diocletian who built a magnificent palace in AD 305. Split’s Old Town also includes the Diocletian’s Palace which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today Split is Croatia’s second largest city full of interesting things that you can explore throughout the year.
Since I’ve visited Split several times my recommendation is to visit it off-season if you want to explore the city in your own time and on your own terms. Spend a weekend walking around the former Roman palace and indulge in some people watching at Riva promenade before you grab something to eat. Maybe visit a museum or two or go for a walk up Marjan hill. These are the things that you can do throughout the year. Besides, staying off-season means that you won’t need to break the bank to afford accommodation. Furthermore, winters are usually mild and sunny so there’s really no reason to push through the crowds in the scorching heat during the summer when you can have Split to yourself at another time of the year. Read on to find out my top 5 recommendations for Split.
Here are top 5 things to do in Split at any time of the year:
1. Diocletian’s Palace
At the heart of Split lies the remarkable Diocletian’s Palace, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. This UNESCO World Heritage site is not just a palace but a living part of the city, with shops, cafes, and homes interspersed among ancient ruins. Explore the Cellars, the Peristyle, and the beautiful Cathedral of St. Domnius, which was originally the mausoleum of Diocletian.
2. Cathedral of St. Domnius
Located within Diocletian’s Palace, the Cathedral of St. Domnius is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use today. Visitors can climb the bell tower for a panoramic view of Split and the surrounding coastline. The cathedral features stunning architecture and fascinating historical artifacts.
3. Marjan Hill
For nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, Marjan Hill offers a lush oasis just a short walk from the city center. The park is dotted with walking trails, cycling paths, and viewpoints overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It’s a great spot for a leisurely hike or a picnic amid the Mediterranean pines.
4. Bačvice Beach
Bačvice Beach is the most popular beach in Split, known for its shallow waters and sandy shore. Ideal for families, it’s also a social hub with beach bars and cafes. Whether it’s swimming, sunbathing, or enjoying beachside cafes, it’s a must-visit spot in Split.
5. Riva Promenade
The Riva is Split’s waterfront promenade, perfect for a leisurely stroll, dining, or people-watching. Lined with palm trees, cafes, and restaurants, the Riva buzzes with activity, especially during the evening. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy the sunset over the sea.
Bonus ideas
If you like visiting museums then I suggest going to the Archaeological museum. It’s home to a vast collection of artifacts dating back to prehistoric times to the Roman period. Highlights include Roman sculptures, ancient coins and other significant items from the region’s history. Another noteworthy museum is Ivan Meštrović Gallery dedicated to the works of Ivan Meštrović who is one of Croatia’s most famous sculptors. It’s set in a beautiful villa overlooking the sea. If you like something more unusual, then visit Froggyland. However, that quirky frog museum is temporarily closed.

To conclude, Split is a wonderful city to visit at any time of the year. With its mix of ancient history, beautiful beaches, and lively culture, Split offers a diverse range of attractions. So pack your bags and prepare to be mesmerized by everything this remarkable city has to offer, regardless of the season you choose to explore.

Lovely summary, Tanja! And agreed.. the spring months are a great time to visit, with less heat and less crowds. The archaeological museum sounds interesting! I’ve not yet been there. I’ve been to another archaeological site just outside Split in Solin, where there are the ruins of the Roman city of Salona. It was amazing to wander through. I have to say, the Roman ruins in and around Split, including Diocletian’s Palace, are so well preserved, much more so than those in Rome itself.

I visited Split back in 2018 during my travels in the Balkans. I based myself there for five nights, not only to explore the city, but also to use it as a base for day trips to Hvar, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina. Split is a beautiful city with a thriving nightlife (at least, when I still went out!), and I loved the views throughout town. Thanks for sharing, Tanja!
