12 Best Christmas Songs

I like listening to Christmas music, be it traditional Christmas carols or the classic rock ´n roll and pop music Christmas songs. There’s no better background for Christmas tree decorating than some festive music.

Here is my selection of 12 best Christmas songs:

Silent night

According to Wikipedia Silent Night was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr, in Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. A true classic.

Jingle bells

This is an American song written by James Lord Pierpont and published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh” in the autumn of 1857. I like the cheerful melody of this old Christmas song.

We wish you a Merry Christmas

It’s a traditional English Christmas carol.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

It’s another traditional English Christmas carol. Imagine receiving such grand 12 gifts on twelve days up to Christmas….I watched a great Hallmark Christmas movie on this subject.

All I want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey

My favourite Christmas song 🙂

Santa Claus is Comin´ to Town by Eddie Cantor

Last Christmas by Wham

Fairytale of New York by the Pogues

Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas by Bing Crosby

White Christmas by Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby

Let it snow by Dean Martin

What about you? Do you like these Christmas songs? Which ones would you add?

  1. I love Fairytale of New York…. hard to beat that one …
    I’d add…
Bing Crosby / David bowie – Drummer Boy
Greg Lake – I believe in Father Christmas
    Coldplay – Christmas Lights.
East 17 – Stay Another Day – not exactly a Christmas song but was a Christmas Hit … sad but brilliant

  3. Good list – glad to see Fairy Tale of New York on there (my all-time favourite) and White Christmas. I would add Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody, the Waitresses’ Christmas Wrapping, Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas, Pretenders’ 2,000 Miles, Jona Lewie’s Stop the Cavalry, Springsteen’s version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Greg Lake’s I Believe in Father Christmas, and Darlene Love’s Walking in a Winter Wonderland (on the Phil Spector Christmas album, which is great!)

  4. The classics are great! I would also recommend a more-modern one: “Christmas Lights” by Coldplay. The lyrics are rather sad, but the tune does get you in the holiday spirit all the same! Thanks for sharing your favorites. 🙂
