Life & blog update: March 2023

my son, Opatija, Croatia

Life & blog update: March 2023.…was a good month. We were all healthy and we finally got to spend sunny weekends outside with our kids. We went for a stroll by the sea in Opatija and in Ičići. Kids enjoyed themselves at playgrounds and at the beach. We had a BBQ at friend’s too. Kids had a couple of play dates and we had a couple of board game nights with our friends.

My husband and I watched a (sort of) stand-up comedy show. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard for straight two hours. It was brilliant! Also, I’ve managed to have cocktails with a friend in this new trendy bar in my hometown (well, I think it opened at least a year ago, but somehow I didn’t manage to go there before).

We bought our daughter her first proper bike. Of course, it just had to be pink with an unicorn on it. She’s 3.5 years old now and she is a proper little boss lady. My son is still very enthusiastic about his football practice. He’s 5.5 years old now and in a year and a half he starts school. I can’t t imagine him as a school child. We had to say goodbye to our kid’s daycare teacher because she retired after 40 years. She was an excellent daycare teacher and she’ll be missed.

I’ve seen recently a number of news articles and blog posts about AI and art and writing. I want human imagination and imperfection, not AI generated pieces. Somehow this technology crept on us without much fuss. I feel like the world changed significantly in the last 5 years, but especially since the start of COVID-19 pandemic. It’s been three years since we were forced to stay inside in fear of our lives. Coronavirus is still here, though we are now all free to go outside and to travel.

I booked a few trips during March. First of all, I decided to go ahead and book my flights to Helsinki for June to meet up with my Finnish friend. We’ve been talking (almost daily) for years. We met through blogging and our similar life situation and love of travel brought us closer than I could have ever imagined ( we both have 2 young kids, but she’s got twins!). So, I’m really excited to finally see her and spend some time together. Then I booked two family holidays. We will be spending Easter weekend in northern Croatia with our kids and friends staying at a hotel across a beautiful castle. Then, we are going again to Brijuni islands in May, just like last year. I’m looking forward to all these trips and of course, there’s also our Krakow trip without kids in April too.

  1. Sounds like a good month for you and your family. I was surprised that your son won’t start school until he is seven. Here in the UK they start in the run-up to their 5th birthday, although the first year is a transition year from nursery school.
I understand what you’re saying about AI and you’re not alone. You might find this recent article from the BBC News website interesting: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-65110030

  2. I am glad to hear you had a great month, Tanja. I am with you on AI -given that AI tech seems to be popping up everywhere and getting smarter by the minute, I find it frightening. Remember how last year, Blake Lemoine, a Google software engineer, claimed that a chatbot being tested within the company had achieved sentience? I am certainly feeling uneasiness about the pace at which the technology is proliferating. Cheers and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  4. Your daughter must be very excited about her new pink bicycle and I’m sure she’ll enjoy riding it lots. March seems to have been a good month for you all and with the optimism of warmer spring days there’s lots to look forward to.
