Budapest is known for its charming Christmas markets, offering festive atmospheres, local crafts, and delicious treats. We visited Budapest and its lovely Christmas markets last December.

Before the trip I managed to find out that you can get a proper Christmas market mug at St. Stephen’s basilica Christmas market. So, I did just that. I bought a lovely red mug with my drink. There’s no deposit system in Budapest like in Austria. You don’t get your money back if you return your mug. You can either get your drink cheaper in an ordinary plastic/paper cup or pay much more to get your drink in a ceramic mug. Later, I saw lovely green mugs at Vörösmarty square Christmas market too. We all enjoyed Budapest’s Christmas markets very much.

Have you been to Budapest’s Christmas markets?

  1. That’s a really cute mug! I went to Budapest in winter many years ago and didn’t love their markets, but I bet they’re a lot better now. I feel like a lot more places are leaning into Christmas market vibes properly these days.

(As an aside, I just went to Tallinn for their Christmas markets and I’m disappointed to report that they didn’t have special mugs at all!!!)
