My Christmas tree travel ornaments is a series of short blog posts about my special Christmas tree ornaments that I’ve bought over the years on my travels. Since I’ve shared with you all my travel ornaments it only makes sense that I show you some traditional Croatian Christmas ornaments as well. I bought these beautiful red licitar ornaments in my hometown Rijeka but these ornaments are traditionally made and used in northern Croatia. Licitar biscuits are edible but they used to serve mainly as gifts of love for weddings or at Valentine’s Day.
Licitar heart is a symbol of Croatian’s capital city Zagreb. Moreover, licitar making as Gingerbread craft from Northern Croatia is added to UNESCO’s “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage”. You can buy licitars at airport shops and most souvenir shops around Croatia.

Licitar ornaments are delightful. I really like hearing about things with traditional significance. When you say edible, are they made of gingerbread?

Yes, it is a type of gingerbread. But not soft. And of course it hardens up and can’t really be eaten after many years. But you can eat it when you buy it

Ah that makes sense.

Counsel from a wise friend: if you have kids, pick up ornaments for them on your travels or when they start their own homes, you’ll be left with nothing! Once a year we buy three of something from our biggest trip.

You started me off collecting tree decorations from places I’ve visited. It’s a lovely reminder when the boxes come out each December!

They look so homey and wholesome, those licitar ornaments. So, do you have Xmas decor at home already? We’re going to decorate soon-ish, maybe next weekend!
